M.O.E.!!! (Make-up Over Everything)

Greetings Fashionista's,

I know you guys peeped the title M.O.E.(Make-up Over Everything)! Well that's me and my sister, Alexia's motto! Drake raps about Y.O.L.O.(You Only Live Once) in his latest single titled "The Motto" and I love song and motto so much that I decided to incorporate the two in my blog. Well, this make-up post is about make up safety, as well as, a few skin care tips.

I decided to share some tips that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) & The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommend to avoid Make Up Bacteria. I would hate for your eye ball to roll out the socket because you have used to same mascara that you've been adding water to for the past 3 years and your face done break out because you've been using that same sponge since high school! Honey, please replace that mess! Here are the FDA & AAD recommend that you keep in mind to avoid make up cotamination:

1. Keep makeup containers closed tight when not in use.

2. Keep makeup out of the sunlight to avoid destroying the preservatives.

3. Don't use eye cosmetics if you have an eye infection such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), and throw away any makeup you were using when you first discovered the infection.

4. Never add any liquid to a product unless the instructions tell you to.

5. Throw away any makeup if the color changes or an odor develops. Preservatives can degrade over time and may not be able to fight bacteria

SHELF LIFE

Preservatives lose effectiveness over time so the shelf life of cosmetics is limited. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends throwing out old cosmetics because old make-up may have spoiled or become contaminated.

The AAD recommends these make-up products be tossed when they reach their life spans (www.aad.org):

1. Powders and shadows: 2 years.

2. Foundation: 1 year

3. Lipstick: 1 year

4. Mascara: 3 months

Also, powder puffs and foundation sponges should be washed or changed regularly

In addition, testing out the make up in department stores has an even higher risk of contamination given the many people who try out the cosmetic. When testing cosmetics in the store, never apply the make up directly, but use a clean cotton swab or tissue to apply the cosmetic to your face.

Now on to skin care, Here are some skin care on a budget tips from the AAD:

  • Cleanse, treat and prevent. Don't let a 12-hour period go by without using some sort of treatment or product on your skin (sunscreen counts).

  • Use sunscreen 365 days a year. This helps prevent sun damage that could lead to wrinkles, age spots, or even skin cancer.

  • Get the most from your body moisturizer. In the winter, apply it to damp skin as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in the moisture.

  • Consider using petroleum jelly. This common, inexpensive product has several uses for skin care including:
    • moisturizing rough, cracked feet, elbows, and hands; dry cuticles and lips; and peeling nails;
    • preventing chafing when running or biking;
    • protecting kids' scrapes and bumps; and
    • applying as a diaper ointment.

  • Use one or two skin care product lines at a time. Limiting product lines saves money and storage space.

  • Remember, a more expensive skin care product is not necessarily more effective. Some brands contain fragrances that may lead to skin problems.

  • Consider dual-function products. Examples include a moisturizer plus sunscreen and a lip balm with sunscreen.

  • Get the most for your hard-earned money. When choosing anti-aging products, look for ingredients such as vitamin A and alpha hydroxy acid.

  • Now ladies, you can flawless skin and a bacteria free make up collection to your list of things that make you Fab-U-Lous!!! Please go to www.fda.gov and www.aad.org for more tips!

    Fashion Fave

    Today's Fashion Fave is the fashion chameleon, Solange Knowles. Her style is very versatile...she'll be rocking Diana Ross big hair one day and the next she's snatched bald with a turban on her head. And if I had to name my favorite celeb that color blocks well....She is definitely at the top of my list. She has been doing some runway work, and I think that is truly her niche. She looks amazing and here are some pics of this weeks Fashion Fave and her phenominal style below:
